Offa’s Dyke 8: Welshpool

Our last stop was Welshpool where we were to stay at the Westwood Park Hotel which is a pub with B&B close to the town centre. It’s not a large town but it does host the largest one-day sheep market in Europe. The unusual name which I thought never actually seemed Welsh is actually a modern artefact: the original Pool was renamed in the railway era to avoid confusion with the town of Poole in Dorset. The pub’s landlord wanted to introduce Munson to some of the regulars in the bar. With so much attention Munson usually finds it the best time to indulge in some of his warbling oratory. Never before has he enjoyed the response of an entire room of people howling back at him! Hilarious!
